A Good Idea

Description

The Full Circle Diabetes Program is designed for American Indian adults with type 2 diabetes.The Full Circle Diabetes Program covers four dimensions - body, sprit, mind, and emotion. Participants are encouraged to participate in activities most relevant to their diabetes self-management needs.

A variety of exercise classes are offered to participants, and nutritional consultations are available. Clinicians promote alternative care and healers to interested participants. Educational monthly breakfasts and dinners are available to participants. Participants are offered classes following the BASICs model of diabetes education. Talking circles are held to discuss diabetes related concerns and other topics of participant interest.

The Full Circle Diabetes Program aims to provide a holistic approach to diabetes self-management.

Results / Accomplishments

The program had 255 participants over 2.5 years. 98% of participants attended at least one event, while two-thirds of participants attended 2 or more offerings. Diabetes breakfasts and nutritional consultations were the most well attended.

Program participants showed a significant improvement in knowledge and resources for managing diabetes (p=.04). Nearly all program participants reported positive diabetes self-management behavior change.
